TRUESDAIL SPEECH CENTER RENOVATION
UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS
Redlands, California
Originally constructed in the 1960s, the Speech-Language Pathology building at the University of Redlands is reimagined to support the evolving needs of a dynamic and highly specialized program. Positioned along a key pedestrian route connecting the campus to the nearby train station, the project strengthens this corridor as both a point of arrival and a daily pathway, enhancing visibility, accessibility, and connection to the broader community.
The renovation repositions the building as a welcoming threshold, opening its edges to the pedestrian spine and public way, while improving circulation and wayfinding. New entry sequences and transparent interventions create visual connectivity, fostering a sense of openness and engagement while maintaining acoustic control essential to the discipline.
Inside, the environment is restructured to meet contemporary clinical, academic, and research demands. Outdated layouts are replaced with flexible therapy suites, observation rooms, collaborative learning spaces, and faculty offices organized around clear circulation paths. Acoustic performance, privacy, and adaptability are central to the design, supporting both one-on-one therapy and group instruction.
By integrating modern programmatic requirements within the existing structure, the project balances preservation with transformation—creating a responsive, human-centered environment that reflects the rigor, empathy, and innovation inherent to the field of speech-language pathology.
